R.E.S.P.O.N.D. Communication Strategies for Crisis Situations

As more individuals face homelessness, unmet mental health needs, and the weight of daily survival, public spaces like recreation centers, libraries, and community hubs are seeing a rise in emotionally charged and crisis-level interactions. Frontline staff are being called to respond to people who are often tired, hungry, lonely, or overwhelmed — conditions that can quickly lead to escalation.

R.E.S.P.O.N.D.
is designed to equip public-facing professionals with the skills and confidence to navigate these challenging moments with empathy, clarity, and calm. Through the lens of resilience, participants learn to recognize signs of distress, de-escalate tense situations, communicate effectively, and care for themselves after difficult encounters.

This course is co-taught by Paula Stephens and Scott Stephens. Together they combine compassion with deep, practical insight. Paula's work as a trauma hospital chaplain brings expertise in emotional regulation and trauma-sensitive communication. Scott is an Army veteran who served in Iraq and has been in law enforcement professional for 17 years. He has worked as an SVU detective specializing in crimes against children. Named Investigator of the Year for his work, Scott brings firsthand experience responding to people in high-stress, emotionally volatile situations. Paula and Scott offer a unique balance of compassion, psychological insight and tactical communication tools, helping participants build real-world confidence, emotional awareness, and grounded presence in moments that matter most.

G.R.A.C.E Training

"G.R.A.C.E. is a five-step training model developed by Roshi Joan Halifax, grounded in compassionate care, that helps individuals in high-stress, emotionally complex environments connect with greater presence, compassion, and clarity. Grounded in neuroscience, social psychology, ethics, and contemplative practice, this training cultivates emotional resilience while reducing reactivity and empathic distress.

Individuals who learn G.R.A.C.E. strengthen their ability to pause, regulate, and respond skillfully, even in the face of suffering or conflict. It supports healthier boundaries, reduces burnout, boosts staff morale, and ultimately improves the effectiveness and humanity of an organization’s culture."
